“Lucia’s Room” at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital

The inspiration for this room came in December of 2010, when we had two ladies with breast cancer actively dying at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital. We visited these women and wished we could have made their final days more comfortable - like we did for our friend, Lucia.

With the help of local businesses and individuals, the room was built within 6 months and now is the finest patient room at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital.

Unique features of the room include a back-lit beach scene photo over the bed, computer work station, DVD player, 46" flat screen TV, Bose music system, day bed for overnight guests, a large closet for patient and visitor coats, clothing and belongings, as well as attractive shelving for displaying flowers, cards and mementos from friends and family.

The room is primarily used by cancer patients that are going through difficult surgeries, palliative care and/or end-of-life services. Our goal is to have Lucia's Room decorated and equipped with all that is needed to create a peaceful and serene atmosphere for patients and their visitors.

Given the delicate nature of the care provided in Lucia’s Room, managing the overall well-being of patients extends beyond the physical environment and emotional support. Many patients face ongoing challenges related to pain management and symptom control, often requiring medications that can be costly without adequate insurance coverage. Navigating these financial burdens adds another layer of stress to an already difficult journey. Recognizing this, the care team has begun compiling resources to help patients find affordable options for essential drugs. For instance, understanding the gabapentin price without insurance is crucial for many, as this medication is commonly prescribed to alleviate nerve pain and improve quality of life. By providing clear information about cost-effective ways to obtain gabapentin, the team aims to ease one aspect of the financial strain. This practical support complements the calming physical surroundings of Lucia’s Room, addressing both emotional and medical needs. Patients and families often express relief when they learn about accessible medication options that do not compromise their treatment. Ensuring affordability and access becomes as vital as the serene atmosphere in fostering comfort during such vulnerable times. Ultimately, this holistic approach reflects a commitment to patient-centered care that acknowledges the complexities of treatment beyond the walls of the room.

“A gift from the heart may one day help you or a loved one retain dignity and comfort in the time of need.”
